Elton- Mr. Sherman John Ortego Sr., 77, passed away Friday, May 20, 2011. He was a native and resident of Elton. Mr.Ortego was employed by Casino Coushatta Resort for 16 years. He loved sports, especially baseball, and he enjoyed growing and eating tomatoes and cucumbers.

He is survived by his wife, Verian Ortego of Elton; four children, Lelia "Lil" Bazinet and husband Michael of Elton, Connie Ortego Miller and husband Phil of Chataignier, Michael "Puz" Ortego of Elton, Sherman John Ortego Jr. "Johnny" of Elton; 9 grandchildren, Seth Bazinet and wife Tori, Chad Monceaux and wife Leslie, Mickey Bazinet and wife Crissy, Telecia Ortego, Jonathon Grant Ortego, Ashley Marcantel and husband Jeremiah, Kristen LaPoint and husband Aaron, Carmen Miller, Kalee Miller; 9 great grandchildren, Devin, Carly, Mykle, Ethan, Miah, Asher, Brilee Jo, Tatum, Conner; two sisters, Nettie Kersh of Elton and Shirley Guillory of Lake Charles.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Luma and Eva Ortego; sisters, Mildred Lafleur and Annette Fontenot; brother, Paul "Bob" Ortego.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, May 23, 2011 at 10:00am in St. Paul Catholic Church in Elton. Father Marshall Boulet will officiate. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin Funeral Home of Elton. Visitation will begin at Ardoin Funeral Home of Elton from 11am-10pm with a rosary at 6:30pm. Visitation will continue Monday from 8am until time of service.
