P.J. was born on September 13, 1931 to Preston Jay Stagg and Louetta Langley in Kinder where he grew up and lived his entire life. He graduated from Kinder High School, attended McNeese State University, and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. P.J. owned and operated Stagg Oil Company which provided bulk fuel, oil, and tires to local farmers, service stations, and other businesses.
Following his return from the Korean War, he married the love of his life, Mickey Ann Baker, in 1953. Their love endured until Mickey passed away in 2003. P.J.'s love of life and infectious laugh was enjoyed by everyone he knew. He was an avid LSU football and New Orleans Saints football fan. To P.J, "life was as good as it gets" watching football games with his children. He also enjoyed hunting quail and doves, and shared his interest in hunting, bird dogs and sports cars with many special friends all of whom he had a comical nickname for!
P.J. was an active community member and was very proud of his hometown of Kinder. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Louisiana Oil Marketer's Association, Board member of the Kinder Development Corporation and was an honorary Mason in the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana. He was also a huge supporter and fan of the Kinder Yellow Jackets. One of P.J.'s most enduring accomplishments was serving for many years as President of Staggwell, Inc., a family-owned agricultural corporation. P.J. had a deep relationship with the Lord and was a lifetime member of the Kinder Bible Church.
P.J. was the proud, loving and devoted father of three children including his beloved son, Preston (Jay) Stagg, III (by whom he was predeceased), his daughter, Marla and husband, David Floyd of St. Francisville, and daughter, Carla and husband, Dr. Peter Karam of Lake Charles. He is also survived by his sister, Sue Stagg, and brother, Charles, and wife, Carla Ann, of Kinder. He was blessed with four grandchildren, Hunter and Amanda Floyd of Baton Rouge and Jordan and Conner Karam of Lake Charles.
The family would like to extend special thanks to all of P.J.'s friends who loved and supported him during his long illness. They would also like to express their sincere gratitude to Grand Cove Nursing Home for the special care and attention given to P.J, to the devoted care of Dr. Brian Clements and to Brighton Bridge Hospice whose kindness and compassion was a blessing for P.J. and the family.
