Monroe, affectionately known to most people as Buddy, was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. His marriage to his wife, Bertie, of 63 years withstood the test of time. His love for his wife was openly affectionate for all to see. Buddy was a hardworking man, working a 40-hour job and, then came home to work along with his wife doing gardening, canning, butchering and wrapping meat. Growing up, his mama had taught him to help in the kitchen. Some of the best barbeque Buddy grilled was cooked on a homemade barbeque pit made from an old washing machine tub. Buddy enjoyed going to his daughters' school and pass out trinkets from the Louisiana Forestry. His children felt proud to show off their daddy's occupation. Buddy also loved to dress as Smokey the Bear and participate in the parades. His memories of going to help fight forest fires in the Pacific Northwest was a long story that he loved to tell. Some of Buddy's favorite pastimes was to fish and hunt, especially deer hunting with his brother-in-law, Eddie Milam, and nephews, Gene and Reggie Milam. Anyone that knew him, knows his love of talking, especially telling deer stories. Buddy loved to go to auctions with his best friend, Allen Ray. He always said he was outnumbered with just women in the family, he being the only male. One thing for sure, he "waited on and petted" his girls, but his grandchildren, great grandbabies, and great-great grandbabies were the twinkle in his eye. In his later years, his number one treat to those in his home, family or friends, was him making coffee and serving each one their cup. Buddy's memory will live on through his beautiful family who will miss him greatly.
Those left to cherish Buddy's memory include his loving wife, Bertie Fowler; three daughters, Sharon Cook (Reginald) and Melody Fowler (Carol Douglas), all of Oakdale, and Lorinda Fowler of Pitkin; five grandchildren, April Cook, Holly Dickens, Steven Sonnier, Bradley Sonnier, and Brittany Sonnier; eight great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
Buddy is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Nelson and Ruthie Fowler; eight siblings, Mary Lupus, Cecil Fowler, William Fowler, Robert Fowler, Clyde Fowler, Juanita Shaw, Myrtle Orton, and Clifton Fowler; one grandson, Chris Cook; one great grandson, Titus Dickens; and one great-great granddaughter, Aleyiah Cook.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers include Steven Sonnier, Bradley Sonnier, Johnathon Young, Ashtion Fontenot, Jeff Fowler, and Mike Shaw.
