Kinder-Funeral service will be held for Mattie Sonnier Ashford, 97, at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016 in the chapel of Ardoin Funeral Home. Rev. Keith Pellerin will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Augustine Mausoleum in Basile under the direction of Ardoin Funeral Home.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, March 11, 2016 from 6-9 p.m. at Ardoin Funeral Home of Kinder. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.
Mattie was a lifelong resident of Kinder. She was married for over 60 years to Preston Ashford before his passing several years ago. She was truly a "farmer's wife" and enjoyed working alongside her husband over the years. She was a very good cook and she enjoyed gardening. Mattie was also an artist who blessed many people with her beautiful paintings. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife and aunt who was loved by many. She will be greatly missed.
Those left to cherish Mattie's memory include her sister, Mary Ann Marshall, of Wolfe City, TX; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mattie is preceded in death by her parents, Remie and Mary Sonnier; her husband, Preston; her four brothers, Willie, Ozemia, Mayous and Julius Sonnier; and four sisters, Wedna Vidrine, Felonise Richard, Rena LaFleur, and Essie Mae Johnson.
