Matilda "Ann" Durio Burgess, age 86 passed away peacefully in her sleep at home surrounded by family on January 7, 2025. She was born May 12, 1938, to her loving parents, Dovick and Ada Montou Durio. Shortly after graduating from Oberlin High School in 1956, she began her career at Calcasieu Marine Bank. Ann served as the Assistant Manager of the bank for 27 years, all while raising her two daughters, Roxie and Sandy. Her and her husband, William "Bill" Burgess later opened Burgess Feed and Flower Shop where she was able to showcase her creativity and her love for flowers. An even greater love blossomed as she displayed what it means to be a devoted "Maw- Maw" to Summer, Marcie, Stevie and Tucker. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Oberlin where she served on the Ladies Altar Society, Bazaar Committee, and Rosary Group. Ann served her church and community faithfully through many organizations such as the Cattleman's Association, the Lil' Miss Allen Parish Pageant, and the SWLA Telethon. Her favorite place to be was in her kitchen surrounded by her family where she spoiled them with her delicious food and as many hugs as she could give. Ann's personality and hands brought warmth and joy to everyone she encountered. Her memory will remain in the hearts of her family, friends and all who were honored to have the privilege of knowing Ann, "Mom", and "Maw-Maw". Her legacy will live on for generations to come, inspiring those around her with her kindheartedness, generosity, and unforgettable spirit.
Those left to cherish Ann's memories include her husband of nearly 50 years, William "Bill" Burgess; two daughters, Danette Roxane Campbell and husband Stephen, Sandy Lynn Scimemi and husband Royce; four grandchildren, Summer Leger and husband Paul, Marcie Dugas, Stevie Perkins and husband Ike, Tucker Scimemi and Shyana; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Dovick and Ada Montou Durio; and her brother, John Claiborne Durio.
In lieu of flowers, Ann's family has requested donations to be made to them for them to send to charities near and dear to Ann's heart.
