Oberlin-Funeral service for Leora Sonnier, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Rev. Keith Pellerin will officiate. Burial will follow in Oberlin Cemetery under the direction of Allen Parish Funeral Home.
The family will receive visitors at Allen Parish Funeral Home-Oberlin Chapel, 119 S. 7th St., on Friday, September 13, 2013 from 12 to 9 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. followed by a Scripture Service officiated by Rev. John Huckaby. Visitation will continue on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.
Leora was a lifelong resident of Oberlin and member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. She was actively involved with the Ladies Altar Society and Rosary Group. She was an excellent homemaker and loved caring for others. She was married to her husband, Simon for 61 years. She enjoyed crocheting and one could often find her praying. She also loved to cook, especially for her children and grandchildren. Her family was the joy of her life.
Survivors include her children-Kermith Sonnier (Betty), Louise Stelly (Mike), Phillip Sonnier, and Kathaleen Hooper (Gerald)-her daughter-in-law, Jamie Sonnier; two sisters-Nita Cole and Earline Harper; 10 grandchildren-Sherman, Cecelia, Chad, Chandra, Cheree, Nick, Stacey, Krystal, Lance and Alexis; 8 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Leora is preceded in death by her husband, Simon Sonnier; a son, Freddie Sonnier; three grandchildren, Kermith Sonnier, Jr., Christopher Stelly and Little Freddie Sonnier; daughter-in-law, Cecilia Sonnier; parents, Clovis and Catherine Benoit; and numerous siblings.
