Elton-A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Leona Woods, 87, at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Elton on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. Fr. Babasino Fernandes will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin Funeral Home.
The family will receive visitors at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Elton on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until time of service. A rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m.
Leona was a devoted wife to her husband, Lawrence, for 67 years prior to his passing away. She was also a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a confident, strong-willed woman. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She loved working in the church and praying the rosary. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. She was known for her delicious cakes and her favorite thing to bake was sweet bread. Leona also loved making quilts and cross-stitching. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who adored her.
Those left to cherish Leona's memory include her five sons-Alvin Woods, Charles Woods and wife, Beverly, all of Lake Charles, Al Woods and wife, Phyllis, Jackie Woods and wife, Patsy, and Patrick Woods, all of Elton; three daughters-Connie Gatewood and husband, Pastor James, of Sulphur, Trudy Woods and Vivian Woods, both of Elton; three brothers-Herman Pelican and wife, Emma, and Adam Boling, all of Elton, and Arden Pelican and wife, Debra, of Oakdale; 21 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and 1 great- great grandchild.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband-Lawrence "Noody" Woods; one son-Phil Woods; her parents-John and Leola Mitchell; two brothers-Warren Pelican and Elwin Pelican; and three sisters-Marie Denton, Abel Robinson and Velma Carter.
