Oberlin-Funeral service for Joseph Richard Young, 66, will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 12, 2017, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church of Oberlin. Rev. Jacob Conner will officiate. Burial will follow in Oberlin Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Oberlin.
The family will receive visitors at Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Oberlin from 10 –10 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, with a Holy Rosary at 7 p.m.
Visitation will resume at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.
Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Carmel, for thirty-seven years. He served five terms as the Chief of Police in Oberlin from which he retired. He was a member of the Lions Club. Richard had a servant's heart and served the town of Oberlin in many ways. He was a lifelong member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic church. He was a man of strong faith. He enjoyed spending time with his family and set the example for unconditional love. He is known as "paw-paw" to many children. He was also known as "Big Richard" to many friends. He was a lifelong resident of Oberlin. He loved to meet his friends at Keith's Place for coffee and brag about his grandchildren. He was a very good cook, loved to fish and loved to play booray. Richard will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish Richard's memory include his wife, Carmel; two sons, Larry Fontenot and wife, Sandra, and Mark Fontenot and wife, Angie, all of Oberlin; two daughters, Kim Rider and husband, Kenneth, of Kinder, and Shelly Durio of Benton; one sister, Francis Maricle and husband, Russell, of Pitkin; twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three special nieces.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents Damas and Rose Young; and one sister, Barbara McDaniel.
