Oberlin-Funeral service for Joseph Eugene Fruge, 89, will be held today, April 16, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Allen Parish Funeral Home-Oberlin Chapel. Rev. Jacob S. Conner will officiate. Burial will follow in Oberlin Cemetery under the direction of Allen Parish Funeral Home.
The family began receiving visitors on Tuesday evening from 4-9 p.m. at Allen Parish Funeral Home, 119 S. 7 th Street. A rosary was prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume this morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.
Eugene was a lifelong resident of Oberlin. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Lion's Club of Oberlin. He served our country during World War II as a member of the Army Air Force. He was a Search and Rescue paratrooper in India, China and Burma. He was also a member of the "Hump" Pilot's Association for flying over Mt. Everest. Following his service, Eugene was a banker with Calcasieu Marine Bank for 39 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a devoted husband of 20 years to his wife, Joyce who preceded him in death. He was a loving dad and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Gene Fruge and wife, Tammy of Elton; two daughters, Sandra Frazier and husband, Gurmon of Austin, TX and Christine Walters and husband, Michael of Statesboro, GA; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Eugene is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Mae Fontenot; and 18 month old daughter, Rochella.
