John James Storer, M.D., 92, passed away at 12:40 AM Tuesday, January 24, 2012 in his Kinder residence surrounded by his loving family.
Dr. Storer was born July 17, 1919 and reared in Iowa, LA and was a graduate of Iowa High School. He was an honor graduate of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now ULL, attended graduate school at Texas A and M University on a teaching fellowship, and graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans. Following graduation, Dr. Storer served in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters as a medical officer in the United States Navy. In 1946, he established his medical practice in Kinder, Louisiana at the urging of Dr. Pete Buck. He quickly, and deservedly, earned the reputation as one of Southwest Louisiana's most outstanding diagnosticians, as well as a premier authority on mental health issues. During his tenure as a family practice physician, Dr. Storer served as Chief of Staff for the Allen Parish Hospital, staff member at W. O. Moss Regional Hospital, and medical advisor for Allen Parish Mental Health Clinic in Oakdale. Dr. Storer retired from his Kinder practice in 2004, but continued to receive the love and admiration of his patients long after his retirement.
Dr. Storer was a retired member of the American Medical Association, Louisiana State Medical Society, and Allen Parish Medical Society. He was a charter member of the American Academy of Family Practice, a member of the American Geriatrics Society, and a fellow in the Royal Society of Health. Dr. Storer was an early member of the American Quarter Horse Association, a member of Kinder American Legion Post 244, Woodman of the World, and Phi Chi Fraternity. He was a long-time member of the Kinder United Methodist Church.
One of his greatest joys was sports, especially football. He was an avid fan of the LSU Tigers, McNeese Cowboys, and New Orleans Saints. Dr. Storer and fellow physician, Dr. James Mayes, were instrumental in establishing the Kinder High School football program in 1958. He served as team doctor for over thirty years, retiring in 1988. Along with his love for sports, he also enjoyed gardening, raising quarter horses, training bird dogs, and spending hours reading any and every available medical journal or newspaper.
Dr. Storer cared deeply for his family and showed great pride in his role as "Grandpa." Those left to cherish his memory are sons, John James Storer, Jr. and wife, Linda of DeRidder, Dr. George V.
