Kinder-Funeral service for John Taylor Mayes, 76, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Kinder Bible Church. Rev. Don Barrett will officiate assisted by Father Keith Pellerin. Burial will follow in Kinder McRill Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Kinder.
The family will receive visitors at Kinder Bible Church from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday, March, 20, 2018. Visitation will resume on Wednesday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Nannette, for 22 years. He was also a lifelong resident of Kinder. He was a lifelong member of Kinder Bible Church where he served as chairman of the deacons and as a trustee. He went every Thursday morning to the Men's Accountability Group. He was a licensed pharmacist in Kinder for 50 years where he owned Mayes Pharmacy. John continued to help at local pharmacies when needed after he retired. John was a past president of Ward II Recreation Board in which he helped in founding Lambert Park. He was a member of the Kinder Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and served as president in the 1970s. John was an avid Kinder Yellow Jacket fan, but just recently became a Welsh Greyhound fan when his grandson began playing football there. John loved to fish, especially running catfish trotlines. He loved camping, farming, ranching, and working his cattle. He farmed rice for many years. He always enjoyed helping to arrange the Taylor family reunion. John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish John's memory include his wife, Nannette Guidry Mayes, of Kinder; four sons, John Taylor Mayes, Jr and wife, Diane of Kinder, Samuel Edward Mayes and wife, Brittany of Welsh, Jeremiah James Mayes and wife, Stephanie of Dallas, TX, and Joseph Milton Buckley and wife, Trudi of Sulphur; two daughters, Daphne Jean Alderette and husband, Marc of Lake Charles, and Melanie Fontenot and husband, Tony of LeBlanc; two brothers, James William Mayes III "Chip" and wife, Carol, of Kinder and Dr. Paul Ewing Mayes and wife, Donna of Montgomery, TX; 14 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his parents, James William Mayes II and Daisy Virginia Mayes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be given to Camp Pearl Ministries or Kinder Bible Church.
