Oberlin- Funeral services will be held for Mr. John D. Manuel, 78, at 1pm on
Saturday, December 8, 2012 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. The funeral
will be officiated by Deacon Norris Chapman. Burial will follow in Manuel Cemetery in Soileau under the direction of Ardoin Funeral Home.
The family will receive visitors at Allen Parish/Oberlin Chapel beginning
Friday, December 7, 2012 from 5-9pm. Their will be a rosary recited at 6:30pm.
Visitation will continue Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 8am until time of service.
John D. Manuel, a longtime Allen Parish Ward 1 Constable, passed
away on Wednesday, December 5. 2012. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and served as an alter server for numerous years. He served as a Ward 1 Constable from October 15, 2002 till December 5, 2012. He was inducted into the U. S. Army on February 2, 1955 and served as a private first class until June 22, 1957. For numerous years, he served as a Merchant Marine, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Manuel also served as deputy custodian of voting machines from 2010 till 2012.
Oberlin town officials said that John was a lifelong resident of the small
town and very well-known in the community. The officials described him as
"personable" and "polite."
Survivors include his two sons, Matthew Shawn Manuel and John Colby
Manuel of Oberlin; his wife, Jenny Manuel of Oberlin; one daughter, Karen Michelle Manuel of Oakdale; two grandchildren, Brandy Johnson and James
Manuel; three great grandchildren, Peyton Comeaux, Addlyne Bass, and Trevon
Johnson; two sisters, Sally Pitre and Jenny Ray of Oberlin; and a host of nieces
and nephews.
John is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Emily Manuel; his father, Tancy
Manuel; his brother, Joseph Rayford Manuel; and his granddaughter, Emelia Denay
Manuel.
