Obituary

Oberlin-A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for John Dewey Bertrand, 83, at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Rev. Jacob S. Conner will officiate. Burial will follow in Oberlin Cemetery under the direction of Allen Parish Funeral Home-Oberlin Chapel.
The family will receive visitors at Allen Parish Funeral Home, 119 S. 7th Street, on Sunday, November 2, 2014 from 3-9 p.m. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume on Monday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.
Dewey was a resident of Oberlin prior to moving to the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jennings. He honorably served our country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church where he served as an usher for several years. He also held membership in the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and Lions Club. He was previously employed by H. Brown of Eunice, owner/operator of Bertrand's Dry Goods and The Supply Store Auto Parts, and manager of NAPA Auto Parts, all of Oberlin. Dewey was also a retired Allen Parish Bus Driver. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was great at barbequing. He was a devoted husband of 51 years to his wife, Mildred, prior to her death. He was also a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. Dewey's memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
Those left to mourn Dewey's loss include his four sons, Lawrence Kirk Bertrand of Piscataway, NJ, Daniel Lee Bertrand of McKinney, TX, John Scott Bertrand of Oberlin, and Michael Mayo Bertrand and wife, Michelle, of Thornwell; three grandchildren, Megan Bertrand Pellegrin and husband, Kenneth, of Bridge City, TX, Courtney Bertrand, and Victoria Bertrand, both of Thornwell; one great grandchild, Taryn Pellegrin of
Bridge City, TX; seven nieces and nephews, Peggy Bertrand Dauzat of Oakdale, Marla Bertrand of Port Arthur, TX, Pam Bertrand Benoit of Overton, TX, Angela Bertrand Terrell of Bridge City, TX, Eric Bertrand of Bridge City, TX, Donna Bertrand of Oakdale, and Ricky Bertrand of Douglasville, GA.
Dewey is preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Mary Benoit Bertrand; his parents, Lawrence Bertrand and Zoeway Marcantel Bertrand; his maternal grandparents, Ozeme Marcantel and Aileen Ortego; his paternal grandparents, Hemar Emar Bertrand and Arila Arvilla Durio; one sister, Alice Mary Bertrand Bertrand; and two brothers, Wilson "Doo" Bertrand and Arthur Lee "Chick" Bertrand.
