Jeffrey, affectionately known as "Jeff" and known by many for his quick wit, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was married to his wife, Kathy, for over forty years. Jeff was born and raised in Westlake and graduated from Westlake High School in 1973 having been very active in baseball, basketball and football during his school years. He then went on to study and play football at McNeese State University where he received a bachelor's degree while majoring in History with a minor in Physical Education. Jeff was a member of the McNeese Cowboy football team throughout his college years with the highlight of his career being a part of the 1976 Independence Bowl Champion Team. After college, Jeff began his career as an electrician with the IBEW Local 861 for 13 years. He then moved on to Citgo Refinery from where he retired after 25 years of dedicated service. Jeff and his family were active members of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church for 25 years. He served as director of altar servers at the church and volunteered his talent as a welder. Jeff fabricated and donated at least ten barbeque pits for use with fund raising over the years. He was an all-around sports enthusiast, loved growing an excessive garden each year, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also raised and bred hunting dogs.
Following his retirement, Jeff and Kathy moved to Kinder and he was finally able to pursue his farming dreams. Another of Jeff's retirement wishes was to own his dream car, a 1955 Chevy, which he purchased and enjoyed putting in car shows alongside his father-in-law. Jeff could restore any kind of truck and had the ability to build anything asked of him. It was very important to Jeff that he taught and passed on his many talents to his sons, as well. Jeff was very proud of his Catholic faith and made a Catholic Cursillo in 1986. Once he and Kathy became active members of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church of Kinder, Jeff furthered his faith journey by making an ACTS Retreat in 2018. Jeff was a loving, kind, hard-working man. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Jeff loved to spoil them and was always giving them special treats; he always had peppermints, M&Ms, and jellybeans on hand for them. Jeff will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish Jeff's memory include his devoted wife, Kathleen "Kathy" Huval Harrell of Kinder; three sons, John "Stewart" Harrell and wife, Bethany of Kinder, Thomas Wayne Harrell and wife, Kasey of Merryville, and Matthew Aaron Harrell of Iowa; one daughter, Jamie "Danielle" Newlin and husband, Albert of Lake Charles; one brother, John "Mahlon" Harrell and wife, Ann of Westlake; two sisters, Lynn Hamilton and husband, Kurt of Westlake and Nanette Singer and husband, Lane of Topsy; 8 grandchildren-Bailey, Brooke, Waylon, Jolee, Jules, Jessa, Bert, Henry, and two more on the way; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jeff is preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Harrell and Hazel "Louise" Bass Harrell.
