Obituary

James "Jack" Elvin Nixon

July 30,1929 -January 10, 2025

Jack passed away at the age of 95 in his beloved home, with his devoted  daughters by his side.  Jack's Homegoing service will be held at 12 o'clock noon on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Indian Village United Pentecostal Church. Reverends Terry Bushnell, Scott Benoit, and Mark Semrau will officiate. Jack will be laid to rest at Nevil's Cemetery in Indian Village located on property adjacent to his home, immediately following his service.

Visitation will be held prior to the service at Indian Village United Pentecostal Church on Tuesday morning, January 14, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 noon.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Kinder.

Jack was born in LeCompte, LA on July 30, 1929 and grew up in Kinder, LA.  He served in the U. S. Merchant Marine December 1947 – July 1950.  He then served in the U. S. Airforce August 1950 – September 1953.  In October 1953 he began his career with Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company, later known as South Central Bell Telephone Company, retiring at the age of 53 in October 1982 after 29 years of service.   Jack married his wife, Mert, in June 1952.  Together they had 5 children.  Due to his employment, they lived in many cities  throughout  Louisiana and Mississippi, settling in Baton Rouge until retirement.  Upon retirement, Jack and Mert moved to Indian Village, LA to be near family.  Throughout his life he had a love of gardening and produced many delicious vegetables and fruit, including blackberries, figs, kumquats, blueberries, and concord grapes.  Jack was happiest when he was on his beloved Massey Ferguson tractor.    He loved collecting telephone company memorabilia in addition to collecting all types of clocks.   In evenings you would find him reading Louis L'Amour books or watching John Wayne or Audie Murphy movies.  If anything needed cutting, he always had a handy pocket knife.  He enjoyed meeting with family over coffee, often accompanied with homemade cookies, or Little Debbie oatmeal cream pies.  He had a love of homemade ice cream but would settle for Bluebell Homemade Vanilla ice cream.  Jack always had a love for babies and children.  Even in the last weeks, he would light up when his niece, April, visited with her baby grandson, Rhett.

Jack found the Lord, received the gift of the Holy Ghost and was baptized at Indian Village UPC in 2006, changing his life forever.  This brought great joy to his family and especially to his wife, Mert.

Those left to cherish Jack's memory include his four daughters, Janna Nixon-Haas and husband, George Haas III of Covington, LA, Dana Rogers and husband, Wayne of Orange, TX, Karen Sue Murphy and husband, Rev. David of Vienna, OH, and Jami N. Robertson and husband, William of Grand Prairie, TX; seven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Two children,  three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and his great-great grandson have been named in his honor.

Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Merthale "Mert" Lormand Nixon; one son, Kevin James Nixon; parents, Rufus E. and Hattie Nixon; two brothers, Rufus E. "Boosie" Nixon, Jr. and Hubert G. Nixon; one sister, Nelda Doucette.
