On April 7, 1922, in Jasper, Texas, a beautiful, loving person, Helen Ashy, was born to the proud parents of Cocab and Richard Ashy. They later moved to Brinkley, Arkansas, where Helen graduated from high school.
After graduating, her family moved to Lafayette, Louisiana, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Dominique Stockyard.
In the years to come, she met the love of her life, George Ashy, and in 1946, they were married. They made their home in Oakdale, Louisiana, where they raised their four children, Barbara, Ned, Melissa and George, II.
Helen continued her career as a bookkeeper in their family businesses, Commercial Furniture, Ashy Oil Co, and Delta Theatre until she was in her 80s.
For pleasure, Helen and George loved to travel, especially those spur of the moment rides, trips to Lafayette to be with family, play cards and dominoes, watching late night basketball and football games. "Helen was very competitive and loved when she beat her grandkids in a game of cards or ping pong."
FAMILY, FAITH, and FRIENDS were so important to Helen!
Helen worked hard to insure her children stayed close to each other and to the grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. This still remains true today! Her love was felt by many. She said "If you don't have LOVE, you have nothing!"
Mom always looked forward to her daily visits from her two sons, just for kisses and "I love you." When her daughters came for visits, they could not get out of the door before she said, "When are ya'll coming back?" She looked forward to calls from her grandchildren, David, Richard, Leslie, Erin and her great grands, Michael, Madison, Kaitlyn, Gabe, Mason, Brantley, and Briggs. Yes, her children and their families were her life along with her sisters and brothers!!!!
Throughout her life, she had many nicknames --- "Queen of the Village, MawMaw, Mama Helen, Mom, Mama." No matter what you called her, her door was always open with a warm hug as you entered.
Special thanks to our amazing and loving caregivers, Cindy, Betty, Michelle, Belinda, Modena, Deanna, Tameka and also, Sherry, who has passed away! To her nephew, Alex, who lived with mom for many years; to Professional Home Health; to Heart of Hospice; to her weekly card players for many years; to her close friends that made trips to Oakdale to see her and to those visits from the ones that live in Oakdale.
MOM, God called you, so go REST IN PEACE and REUNITE with the love of your life, DAD! WE WILL MISS YOU!!!
"MOM you left us beautiful memories, YOUR LOVE is still our guide, although we cannot see you, YOU'RE ALWAYS AT OUR SIDE!"
