She lived her entire life of 100 plus years in Mittie, Louisiana. Her mother passed away at a very young age, so she and her siblings were raised by their grandparents, David N. and Mary Young Smith. At the age of 12 "Gertie" had to stand on a wood box to be able to reach the table to make biscuits and cook for the whole family. As an adult she was known for her fried chicken, biscuits, pies and beautiful canned goods. She was an avid gardener, she didn't just raise a garden but a 40-acre field. "Gertie" had an exceptional green thumb and fed the masses from her garden, milk bucket, and hen house. She was a great seamstress, as well a skilled quilter and crocheter. "Gertie" was a well-read, self-educated woman. She attended Fairview School through the eighth grade and then had to drop out to care for her ailing Grandmother. "Gertie" loved all people and prayed without ceasing! Every prayer or blessing included "Lord, please take care of all the little children". "Gertie" will be forever missed and unconditionally loved by all who knew her.
Those left to cherish "Gertie's" memory include her three daughters, Mrs. Linda Pruitt of Osceola, Ak., Mrs. Karren Carlisle of DeRidder, and Mrs. Enola Nellen of Mittie, one son, Mark Edward Tramel and wife Pamela of Mittie; her sons-in-law, Jimmy Pruitt, Wayne Nellen, John Moreau and Don Carlisle; grandchildren that cherish her memory are Dr. Jamon Pruitt, Dane Pruitt, Pastor Anthony Moreau, Dr. Shannon Moreau, Stewart Moreau and Stephanie Higginbotham, Jessica Rahme, Ashley Webber, Tabitha Tramel, and Cody Tramel; step grandchildren, Monica Nellen, Donna and Lance Carlisle; she was blessed with 38 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren.
