Oberlin-Funeral Services for Dorothy J. Akins, 85, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2020 at Oberlin Baptist Church. Bro. Ty Pearce will officiate. A private burial will follow at Oberlin Cemetery under the direction of Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Homes.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Oberlin Baptist Church from 4-8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Monday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service. Please note, due to state mandates, a face covering is required inside, and social distancing must be maintained throughout your visit.

Dorothy Janis Akins was born on February 27, 1935 to Swazie T. and Mable Shurlds Johnson. She went home peacefully on October 30, 2020 to meet her Savior. Dorothy was the proud mother of James Scott Akins (57), Lori A. Fort, (53), and Kennith E. Akins (49) and a loving wife to Elmer W. Akins who has since gone to be with the Lord. Dorothy spent most of her life serving the Lord at Oberlin Baptist Church where she was a member for many years. Dorothy also taught school at Oberlin High School for 43 years as a business teacher. She loved teaching and helping her students. Through the parliamentary procedure team where she served as an advisor, she hosted students in her home for many years for practice where she always had cookies and drinks for them. Her relationship with her Savior and her many years serving, Dorothy leaves a legacy through the great number of lives she was able to impact and improve. She will be missed by the many people who knew her, loved her and benefitted from her generosity.

Those left to cherish Dorothy's memory include her two sons, James Scott Akins and Kennith Edward Akins of Oberlin; her daughter, Lori A. Fort; son in law, H. Frank Fort III; and three grandchildren, Michele Akins, Aidan Fort and Addison Fort.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Swazie T. Johnson and Mable Shurlds Johnson; and her beloved husband, Elmer W. Akins.
