Dry Creek-Larry G. Greene, a man of basketball for 40 years in the state of Louisiana, has passed away peacefully at his home in Dry Creek. He was 78 years old. He was a member of Fenton Baptist Church of Fenton, LA.
Larry began his basketball career as a student at Fenton High School. He went on to earn honors as an All-State basketball player for 5 years, leading Fenton to state champion honors. He continued his playing days at Tulane University in New Orleans for one year before transferring to Centenary College in Shreveport. Larry earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education while at Centenary and began his coaching career.
Larry first coached at Stonewall and went on to build programs at numerous schools throughout the state. He coached at Converse, Baptist Christian College in Shreveport, and Panola Junior College in Carthage, TX. Larry moved on to Pleasant Hill High School serving as Principal and Coach. As he finally moved toward home, Larry coached at schools including East Beauregard, Iowa, Hyatt, Fairview, Forest Hill Academy, Elton and finished up his education career as Principal of Hyatt High School. During his 40 years of coaching, Larry earned over 1000 wins in high school and college teams. He coached numerous young men the majority of those years. He later coached girls' teams, as well. Larry was known for his ability to take a program and build it into a winning team. His teams were known for running a vicious fast break. He earned numerous accolades as a coach in the state of Louisiana and mentored many young people to become coaches themselves, including his two sons-Mike and Chris, granddaughter-Lyndzee, and grandson-Jake.
Larry is survived by his two sons-Michael (Mike) R. Greene, Sr. and wife, Sonya, and Chris Greene and wife, Linda, all of Dry Creek; two daughters-Laurie Greene Fisher and Suzonna Greene Dillon and husband, David, all of Lake Charles; two sisters-Sandra Greene Woolley and husband, Carroll, of Olney, TX and Deborah (Debbie) Greene of Dry Creek; 12 grandchildren-Michael R. Greene, Jr. and wife, Wendy, of Lake Charles, Tera Greene Hardison and husband, Kelvin, and Kaydee Greene, all of Shreveport, Garrett Greene and wife, Stacy, of Dry Creek, Lyndzee Greene McConathy and husband, Logan, of Bossier City, Jake Greene and wife, Brittany, of Grant, Christopher Fisher of Covington, A1C Ryan Greene, stationed in Germany, of Dry Creek, Mackenzie Greene Johnson and husband, Jordan, of Lafayette, Taylor Fisher of Covington, Dane Greene of Dry Creek, Ashlyn Dillon of Broken Arrow, OK; 19 great grandchildren; one niece-Leah Woolley Milton of South Lake, TX; one nephew-Darrell Woolley of Olney, TX; and his caretakers for the past five years-Sheila and Shannon Strange of Dry Creek.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents-Roy D. and Therese Greene; and one great granddaughter-Hannah Greene.
The family will receive visitors at Ardoin Funeral Home of Kinder on Thursday, October 1, 2015 from 5-9 p.m. Visitation will continue at Dry Creek Baptist Church on Friday morning from 9 a.m. until time of service. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Rev. Charlie Bailey and Rev. Curt Iles will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery of Dry Creek under the direction of Ardoin Funeral Home.
