Clara Juanita Johnson Emmons was born to Johnnie and Lonia Johnson and raised on a hill overlooking Cocodrie Bayou, in a house her father built. Clara loved her cousins, sometimes wore dresses made of flour sacks, never liked the soap her mother made, and helped with the family store, which they ran for several years, selling milk for $.10 a quart and eggs from their chickens. She liked school and dreamed of going to college. College was not affordable, but a six-month scholarship to the Alexandria Business School would provide a pathway to her future profession. Before graduating, she married Preston Emmons, but stayed to complete her certification. Preston and Juanita relocated to Woodland Acres, Texas, where he was an electrician apprentice, and she got her first job as the bookkeeper for Morrison Hardware. Together they raised three children and had many dear friends. They would return to Clearwater almost every weekend for many years, instilling in her children a love for the Clearwater community. Clara and Preston worked for many years to ensure their children's future would include college. Clara was widowed in 1992 and never remarried. She worked after the death of her husband, managing an apartment complex for many years. Clara returned to Clearwater to care for her mother after the passing of her father and remained in the community until Dementia found her. She struggled bravely for another 12 years surrounded by family. Clara Juanita believed in God her entire life and continued to pray and receive communion until her passing. Clara was a strong woman who loved deeply and completely. Grandma Clara was preceded in passing by her beloved Natalie.
Those left to cherish Clara's memory include her two sons, Michael Preston Emmons and John Blake Emmons; one daughter, Janet Lynn Wells; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
