Bernice L. Savant
October 23, 1919
March 10, 2008
Kinder- Mrs. Savant was born in Oberlin on October 23, 1919, to Telecia and Josien Courville. With her marriage to Wilson Savant on September 9, 1936, she began her career as a housewife and mother in Indian Village.
Her joy was to prepare meals and bake treats for her family. Being a self taught seamstress, she dressed her children in latest fashion and shared her talents with friends and relatives. Her talents also included crocheting and quilting. Traveling was of great importance because it encouraged her children to learn and "enlarge their territories". She traveled often sitting in her home reading her beloved World Book Encyclopedias.
As a member of Sacred Heart Mission Church in Indian Village, she was a member of the choir, Ladies Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, and taught Cathechism for 40 years in her home and served coffee, biscuits and Mayhaw jelly to Msgr. A.J. Robichaux and Altar Servers after every Saturday morning Mass. She and her husband, Wilson, volunteered as bookkeeper and managers of the Indian Village Cemetery for 52 years. She will be remembered as a mother who read to her children, taught her children the importance of religion, the value of work and encouraged them to always do their best.
She was preceded on death by her husband of 68 years, Wilson Savant; and son, Bobby. Left to share in her memory are one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bruce LaFargue of Lake Charles; three sons and daughter-in-laws; Gerald Josien Savant and Diana "Dickie", Elsie Savant, Darrell "Doc" Savant, and Geneva, and Ted Savant and Jeannie; one brother and sister-in-law P. B. and Celeste Courville and their children Connie McConathy, Terry Sittig and Bobby Courville all of Lake Charles; 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4:00PM-8PM, Tuesday, with a Rosary beginning at 6:00PM in Ardoin Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Wednesday at 8AM in the Church until time of service. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00AM,Wednesday at St. Philip Neri Catholic church in Kinder. Father Carlos Garcia will officiate. Burial will follow in Indian Village Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephew, Bobby Courville, and oldest grandson, Shannon LaFargue, Jerry Savant, Lyle Savant, Brett Savant and Eric Savant.
Much gratitude is given to the Kinder Retirement and Rehabilitation Center and Dr. Ughovwa for their support and care.
Special mention to Memorial Hospital and the loving care of the staff, especially to the LSU Family Practice including Dr. Ben Williams and Dr. Davenport. We would also like to remember those who visited her and especially her dear deceased friend who she will meet again, Mrs. Vergie Bushnell.
